The "Order of the Dragon" was founded by King Sigismund of Luxembourg in 1408. The Order’s purpose was to defend the Hungarian throne and the Christian faith against the Ottoman Empire, which was expanding into Europe. The Order’s name comes from the dragon, which was the symbol of the king’s father, Charles IV. The members of the Order were primarily high-ranking nobles and princes from Hungary and other parts of Europe. They swore to defend the king and the kingdom against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, and to uphold the Catholic faith. Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler or Dracula, was the most famous member of the Order. In 1431, King Sigismund inducted Vlad as a member of the order. The Order’s mission to defend Christianity against the Ottoman Turks may have been an inspiration to Vlad. He famously fought against the Turks during his reign as Prince of Wallachia. The Order of the Dragon continued to exist until the end of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1918. The "Order of the Dragon" is remembered today as an important symbol of Hungary’s medieval struggle against the Ottoman Empire.Shirts are custom made to order.
